The Hidden Wave: Perimenopause, ADHD & Adult Women in Clinical Practice

A 1.5-Hour CEU Training for Mental Health Professionals

A 1.5-credit, NBCC-approved continuing education course for clinicians. Learn to recognize and respond to the overlap of perimenopause and ADHD in adult women — covering the underlying neurobiology, differentiation strategies, screening and assessment, equity-informed and inclusive care, and collaborative treatment planning. This is the clinical pattern that walks into our offices constantly and is almost never named. Fully self-paced and online, the course includes a companion participant workbook, a pre-test and post-test, and a certificate of completion. Presented by Olivia L. Baylor, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, CFMHE, RYT-200, through My Mental Health University.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the neurobiological overlap between perimenopausal hormonal change and ADHD symptom presentation in adult women.

  • Explain how fluctuating and declining estrogen affects executive function, attention, working memory, and emotional regulation.

  • Differentiate perimenopause-driven cognitive change from primary ADHD and from co-occurring presentations.

  • Apply screening and assessment strategies for women presenting with attention, memory, and mood concerns in midlife.

  • Develop a clinically informed, collaborative treatment and referral plan addressing both hormonal and ADHD-related factors.

The Overlap of Perimenopause and ADHD Is a Clinical Blind Spot — Are You Trained to See It?

Most clinicians were never taught how perimenopause and ADHD collide in adult women. Yet this pattern walks into our offices constantly — and women are too often told they're "just stressed" while real, treatable factors go unaddressed. This course gives you the neuroscience, differentiation strategies, and screening and assessment skills to confidently recognize and respond to this overlap — and to deliver the kind of care these clients have been missing.

Let's break it down

  • Module One
Why the overlap of perimenopause and ADHD is a clinical blind spot, who it affects, and why so many women are told they're "just stressed." You'll learn to see the pattern that walks into your office constantly.
  • Module Two
The neuroscience that ties it together — how estrogen shapes attention, memory, and emotional regulation, and why perimenopause and ADHD act on the very same brain systems.
  • Module Three
How to differentiate perimenopausal cognitive change, primary ADHD, and co-occurring presentations — including the "unmasking" of midlife ADHD and the conditions this picture is most often mistaken for.
  • Module Four
A midlife-informed approach to evaluation — the four history threads, what screening tools can and can't do, clinical interview prompts, and knowing when and where to refer.
  • Module Five
Recognizing the women most often overlooked — women of color, refugee and immigrant women, and LGBTQ+ clients in midlife — plus practical adjustments and affirming, inclusive language.
  • Module Six
Turning recognition into action — psychoeducation, executive-function and behavioral strategies, collaborative multidisciplinary planning, and protecting the therapeutic relationship.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) with extensive experience in culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health care and clinician education. Drawing on years of developing accredited continuing education and training hundreds of professionals across the country, I bring clear clinical reasoning, strong cultural formulation, and a practical, real-world lens — skills I now bring to the overlap of perimenopause and ADHD in adult women. My work centers on the clinical realities of women in midlife: recognizing an overlap most clinicians were never trained to see; differentiating perimenopausal cognitive change, ADHD, and co-occurring presentations; and delivering equity-informed, inclusive, within-scope care. Through this course, I help clinicians recognize this hidden wave with confidence and respond with assessment and care that is clinically sound, culturally responsive, and genuinely useful in the room.
